What maintenance does a silo dust collector need?

Most of the work is checking rather than replacing. A silo vent filter has few moving parts: pulse valves, a controller, and the elements. The tasks that prevent failures are simple and quick, and the ones that get skipped — draining the air header, recording pressure drop — are the ones that later cost elements.

The single most useful habit is recording differential pressure regularly, because a trend distinguishes a gradual media problem from a sudden cleaning or mechanical failure. A one-off reading cannot.

Which readings tell you something is wrong?

  • Pressure drop rising and not recovering after a cleaning cycle — blinding, moisture, or cleaning not firing.
  • Pressure drop falling close to zero — usually bypass through a torn element or failed seal, not improved filtration.
  • Visible emission at the vent — element or seal failure; inspect before running further.
  • Cleaning audible but ineffective — measure dynamic header pressure through the sequence.
  • Compressed air consumption rising — a leaking valve or a diaphragm that no longer seats.

When should filter elements be replaced?

Element life is driven by air-to-cloth ratio, dust characteristics, moisture and cleaning settings — not by a fixed calendar interval. Replacement is indicated when:

  • Pressure drop no longer recovers after cleaning, and the moisture and air-supply causes have been ruled out
  • Elements show physical damage, thinning at nozzle impingement points, or seal failure
  • Emission appears at the vent

Replacing elements before establishing why they blinded normally repeats the failure on the same timescale. The moisture source or the air-to-cloth ratio has to be addressed first.

What is worth keeping as spares?
