Bag and cartridge filters can both work in silo venting service. The practical choice depends on available space, dust behaviour, required area, cleaning arrangement, replacement access and the owner's maintenance preference.
Bag Filter Characteristics
Tubular bags supported by cages tolerate repeated flexing during pulse cleaning and are widely used for cement, fly ash and mineral dust. Their open spacing can help dust release when the cleaning system is correctly aligned.
Bags may require more vertical removal clearance. Cage condition, bag fit and sealing at the tube sheet should be checked during maintenance.
Cartridge Filter Characteristics
Pleated cartridges concentrate media area into a compact element. They can suit limited footprints and clean, dry powders when pleat spacing and dust release are appropriate.
Very fine or sticky dust can bridge deep pleats and reduce usable area. Cartridge selection should consider pleat geometry, media treatment and whether the pulse energy reaches the full element.

Decision Method
Ask suppliers to state actual installed media area, design airflow, filtration velocity, element dimensions and replacement procedure. Compare these values rather than relying on labels such as high efficiency or compact.
For retrofit work, access may decide the element style. A theoretically efficient element is not practical if it cannot be removed under existing pipework or handrails.
Do Not Decide From Shape Alone
A pleated cartridge can offer compact area, but close pleats may retain cohesive powder. A bag can tolerate different dust-release behaviour but requires sufficient length and replacement clearance. Media geometry should follow the powder and maintenance plan.
